Meet & Greet

Sorry, This is little late everyone.  My blog is now up and running!  Yay!

My first week consisted of meeting many new people and learning the layout of the school.  I was fortunate to meet the principal, the dean, multiple special education personal, my ct teacher, other English teachers and of course the students!  There were many new faces and names to learn.  To me this is the part that can be overwhelming because I have a lot of difficulty remembering names and not for lack of trying.  So this week I tried out some new ideas that Jillian gave me to remember names and I remembered more than most times.  Hopefully, I will get everyone's name right soon.

In addition to meeting all of these wonderful, friendly people I also got to grade midterms. I'll admit at first I was intimidated.  My ct teacher went through quite a few papers with me analyzing and explaining the choices we made for a grade.  This process was helpful because it made me more confident with my evaluation of their papers.  Sometimes I wonder, how do you know if you grade to hard or to easy?  My ct's process helped me to see that I was in the right range with my evaluations of the tests.  However, I still really dislike the whole idea of grading.

  1. Remembering names is also a weakness of mine but I've been trying to focus on overcoming this flaw! What are Jillian's tips? I am intrigued.

Also... welcome to the wonderful world of blogging!

  2. Hi Katie. Thanks for the welcoming! Jillian suggested meeting each student as they walk into the door and having them say their name and then you say nice to meet you so and so. Her idea about this little trick is that you hear the name and speak it. Jillian's other idea was a picnic basket game. You have each student say their name and have them bring a food item which begins with the first letter of their name to the make believe picnic. For example, Lisa is bringing lemon berry pie to the picnic. I hope this helps and good luck!
